Your Pets and Parasites
What is a parasite?
A parasite is an organism that lives in or on an organism of another species (its host, in this case, your pet) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense. We can find two kinds in our pets, inner parasites (mainly worms) and outer parasites (tick fleas, mites…)
Why do I need to protect against parasites?
Parasites can cause different diseases by themselves and also transmit other diseases and bacteria and that can lead to secondary health problems for your pets.
How often do I need to treat my pet?
Treatment for worms should be done every two weeks from the age of 2 weeks to 12 weeks and every 3 months thereafter for the rest of your pets life. Flea and tick treatments should be done every 1-3 months depending on brand and season.
I think my pet has parasites, what should I do?
Different parasites can cause different signs. Worms can cause from vomiting or diarrhea to coughing or shortness of breath, external parasites can cause itching to generalized weakness. If you suspect your pet can have parasites you should contact your vet for a checkup and pick up treatment at your local clinic. You could as well collect a 3-day stool sample so your vet can examine it.
