Vaccinations
Does my pet need vaccinations?
It’s highly recommendable to vaccinate all pets.
Vaccines provide immunity against the most dangerous of infectious diseases.Your pet does not need to be close to other animals to get infected, the virus can be passed in the air, environment, and on your shoes or clothes. They can survive in gardens or pavements for up to six months.
How often do I need to vaccinate?
Most vaccines need to be given once yearly.
What if It's been more than two years since the last vaccination?
You will need to start again with a primovaccination protocol, that means an initial vaccine will be given followed by a second vaccination two to four weeks later.
How does a vaccination work?
Vaccines contain harmless forms or parts of viruses and other infectious agents that pose a risk to your pet. Following vaccination, the animal's immune system generates a protective response that will prevent the infection, or in the rare case of infection it’ll have milder symptoms. It is important that the animal is healthy at the time of vaccination so that its immune system can create an appropriate immune response.
Why vaccinate?
When your pet comes into contact with an infectious disease for the first time, his immune system will try to protect against it, but unfortunately, it may become ill whilst its body is trying to learn how to fight the infection.
Vaccines teach the immune system how to act in case of infection in advance, what it is crucial concerning incurable infectious diseases, or in case of very young or weak animals.
When to vaccinate?
Maternal immunity decreases rapidly, so puppies need their first vaccination at 8 weeks old. The vet will do a first health check and give you a vaccine record.
They will need at least another vaccine 4 weeks after the first one. This will set an appropriate immune response before the puppy has any chance to get exposed to infectious agents.
This immunity needs to be maintained by an annual booster vaccination.
What vaccinations cover
Cats and dogs are susceptible to different diseases, vaccinations have been developed to cover against the most common and dangerous infections for each species.
