Pet Diet & Nutrition
Diet And Nutrition
Providing the correct nutrition appropriate to your pet's life stage is essential to maintaining its health.
We normally recommend keeping pets on a dry food diet, since it helps them to maintain a better dental health, but this can vary depending on specific situations and conditions.
The high amount of pet food brands with different quality and price nowadays can be confusing for owners. Here at Kilcock Veterinary Hospital we will pick and devise a diet plan suitable to your animals needs.
The benefit to these foods:
They are formulated from high quality ingredients ensuring digestibility.
The high digestibility means that significantly less food needs to be eaten per day, consequently reducing food costs when compared to some "cheaper" foods.
The quality of the ingredients ensure a glossy coat, together with the development of healthy bones and teeth.
The availability of specific formulations for all ages of dogs and cats means that your pet gets the optimum nutrition for each life stage.
While these premium foods do cost a little more, their higher quality will ensure better health and less problems expected in the future.
Switching your pet to a new diet.
Switch the food over gradually over the period of a week.
Start with a mixture of 25% new and 75% old and feed for two or three days, then step it up to 50:50, and finally end up with a mix of 75% new and 25% old.
If you don't detect any changes in their digestion in the week's time, you can start feeding the new food exclusively.
If you observe vomiting or diarrhoea, contact your vet for advice, since your pet may need a longer transition time, or they may suggest a different diet.
